Black Isle, Inverness, Nairn & Forres shows
Over the past 5 years students who attend Cantraybridge College have taken great pride in entering their home grown produce including fruit,
vegetables and flowers into the Black Isle Show and the Nairn and District Flower Show. Each student is dedicated in learning and developing new
skills and gaining confidence in all areas of Horticulture within the College. These skills show through in the end product lined up on the show
bench. The students gain satisfaction and achievement in entering these shows and are aware that it is not about winning but about participation
and having fun. It is an opportunity for the students to put their training into practice and demonstrate and express their capabilities. At this
year’s Black Isle Show, first prizes were won in three categories of the flower, fruit and vegetable section with a total of sixteen awards in all.
In the learning disabilities section there was a clean sweep of all the awards. In addition, Ruth Macauley won second prize in the Open Craft Section
for a ‘Celebration Card’ There were at least 15 other cards in competition with Ruth’s and this is a huge personal achievement for her.
In the poultry department the Black Isle Show is one of the highlights of the year. The students are very involved in the show preparations
; they work as a team to select, wash and then blow dry their chosen hens and ducks. Along with preparing the poultry rabbits and guinea pigs have
to be groomed for their classes and eggs have to be chosen for the egg section. On show day students have to be at the college by 7am, everyone is
so excited as we load our exhibits into the Landover and travel to the show. Exhibits are all penned by 8am and then we head to the catering tent for
a coffee and bacon roll. After a walk around the show ground we head back to the Fur and Feather tent to check our results, the student’s faces when they
see the rosettes make all the hard work so worthwhile. Competition was very strong this year and we were delighted to receive 3x2nd, x 1x3rd and 2x4th, the
best result being 2nd with a home bred Netherland Dwarf rabbit in a very strong rabbit class. As the students had prepared all the exhibits themselves they
had a tremendous sense of achievement.
