Five Highland footballers and two coaches have just returned
home after a successful trip to Switzerland competing for a
Scottish Select team in the Schtroumpfs European Tournament for
learning disabilities. The players all members of the Highland
United Football Club set up the guidance of Highland Disability
Sport played 9 games losing only once.
The young team showed great endeavour playing together for the
first time against teams who have been playing with each other
for months leading into the competition. They got off to a
flying start with a 3-0 win against France then a 1-0 win
against Germany with a superbly taken free kick by Ritchie Munro
from Cantraybridge near Inverness. In the final game in the
league section Scotland held off an onslaught on their goal by
the favourites of the tournament Spain thanks to the heroics of
Highland goalkeeper Jason Simpson also from Cantraybridge. Time
after time he pulled off some amazing saves which was widely
appreciated by the Swiss crowd who were backing Scotland so that
they could avoid the Spanish in the next round. The score ended
0-0 which got the Scots into the final stages of the tournament.
Eventually they finished in 7th position out of the 18 teams
that took part and recorded wins against France 3-0, Germany 1-0
and Luxembourg 1-0 with 0-0 draws against Italy, Austria,
Portugal and Belgium. They eventually went on to play the Swiss
for the 7th place position and beat them 2-1 in their final
game.
The results in the league were as follows:
Played 8; Won 3; Lost 1; Drew 4; Goals for 5; Goals Against 4; Points 13.
The Highland players and coaches were assisted in the funding for the trip by Inverness Common Good Fund and Highland Council funded Sports Councils in Sutherland, Ross Shire, Nairn and Inverness and are also grateful of the support from Don Lawson of Johnny Foxes, Inverness
